Beckham's tips on what to accomplish during mid-sem break

11 April 2022

Hi everyone, my name is Beckham and I’m a 5th-year student here at Macquarie University. Today, I’ll be talking about making the most of the mid-semester break!

With mid-semester break right around the corner after Week 7, it’s a great time for students – especially first-year students, to have a short break before university continues again in Week 8. Here are some tips and tricks to help you make the most of your mid-semester break!

Catch up with your coursework

The mid-semester break is a great opportunity to catch up with your coursework. Doing so will ensure that you don’t start the second half of the semester behind.

Thinking of going ahead of schedule? It’s a great idea to make good use of the two weeks in the mid-semester break to study ahead. This will put you in an advantageous position, and reduce stress when university commences again in Week 8.

Brush up your resume

For those who may have a surplus of time during the mid-semester break, it is a great chance for you to brush up on your resume, cover letter and interview skills.

If you're unsure whether your resume is structured correctly, CV360 can help polish your resume. You should also seek to enhance your understanding of the application process for vacationer and graduate roles by reading up on the information on Assessment Centres.

Taking advantage of the two weeks you have during the mid-semester break to brush up your resume, cover and interview skills will put you at an advantage when applying for roles.

Apply for jobs

I also highly recommend you take advantage of the two weeks to gain work experience.

Not sure where to start? Read through the career and employability recourses to enhance your job search strategy. Whether it be casual, part-time work, internship or volunteering roles, gaining work experience will help you to develop your skills and allow you to apply what you’ve learnt at university in a workplace environment!

Pick up a new hobby

Keen to try something new? Why not pick up a new hobby during the mid-semester break.

Interested in joining a gym? Join a fitness class at the Macquarie Sport and Aquatic Centre! Interested in trying out martial arts? Try out Taekwondo, Karate or Jiu-Jitsu! As a student who’s been doing Taekwondo weekly for 4 years, picking up and doing martial arts has significantly helped me with my concentration and fitness!

Whether it be taking up a sport such as tennis, or bushwalking with your friends, picking up a hobby that you’ll enjoy during the mid-semester break will allow you to make the most of it.

Have a well-relaxed and wonderful Easter over the mid-semester break!
