Congratulations on nearing the end of your studies

Entering your final year of study at Macquarie University? Please read the information below carefully and carry out the steps that will assist you to complete your course on time.

The information on this webpage is for Coursework students only. If you are studying a Higher Course Research program, you will need to refer to the Graduate Research Academy for further information.

1. CHECK YOUR OWN PROGRESS

To check if you are on track to meet the requirements of your course, complete the Course Guidance Self Check.

If you still have questions after completing the Self Check, you can submit a question along with your Self Check via the Course Guidance form.

2. PROVIDE YOUR UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI)

The USI is a lifelong reference number issued by the Australian Government for your education journey. It is made up of a combination of ten numbers and letters.

From 1 January 2023, all higher education students (including those who commenced prior to 2021 and international students studying onshore) must have a USI to graduate and receive their award. Find out more about how to apply and provide your USI.

3. INFORM THE UNIVERSITY YOU INTEND TO COMPLETE YOUR STUDIES

Coursework students need to submit an ‘I Expect to Complete’ (IETC) form by the Census Date of their final study period.

The IETC tells the University that you expect to meet the requirements of your award at the end of your nominated completion period. It ensures that once your results are released for your final session of study, your record will be checked to see if you meet the requirements to qualify for your nominated course.

Please note you will not receive a response specifically from this form, and you will not be assessed for completion until after your final results have been released for your final session of study. Students should only nominate an upcoming study period; retrospective applications will not be assessed for completion. For example, a student applying during Session 1 2024 should not nominate Session 2 2023.

Nominating a Major/Minor/Specialisation

Students should ensure that they only nominate Majors/Minors/Specialisations that they meet requirements for. Students will be assessed against all the nominated components they specify in their ‘IETC’ form.

Therefore, any missing requirements for your nominated Majors/Minors/Specialisations will prevent you from qualifying.

Submitting an ‘IETC’ after Census Date

Where an IETC form is submitted after the Census Date of your final study period, the University cannot guarantee that you will be qualified at the time of result release.

If you are not qualified within 5 business days of the Results Release of your final study period and you submitted your IETC before census date, please submit an enquiry via the Course Guidance form.

Please allow up to 20 business days for your request to be assessed.

Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) students

If you are in your final session and are currently admitted in the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) program and wish to graduate without Honours, please nominate the Bachelor of Psychology on your IETC form.

Undergraduate double degree students

Exiting with a single course

If you are admitted into an undergraduate double degree and you wish to exit with the single degree component of your studies, you should apply to Course Transfer prior to your final year of study in the single course you wish to exit with.

If you are unable to course transfer into the single degree component of course that you wish to exit with, please submit an IETC by the Census Date of your final study period, requesting to exit with the single degree you wish to be qualified with. If you miss the Census Date, you must submit an AskMQ enquiry requesting to exit.

If you meet all your course requirements at the end of your final session as nominated in your IETC form, you will be qualified for this course and the status of this course will show as passed. Once you have been qualified for your course, further amendment cannot be made to your study plan. Students will need to apply as new applicants to be admitted into the single course component that they did not qualify for, should you wish to return to your studies.

Postgraduate double degree students

If you are admitted into a postgraduate double degree and you wish to exit with a single degree component of your course, you will need to submit an IETC form nominating the single degree as the course that you wish to be assessed against for qualification instead of your admitted course.

Exiting with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (Postgraduate students only)

If you are a postgraduate Masters student who wishes to exit with a relevant eligible Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma for your course, you will need to submit an IETC form nominating the exit award as the course that you wish to be assessed against for qualification instead of your admitted course. If the exit award you wish to qualify with is not available, please submit an enquiry via AskMQ.

If you meet all your course requirements at the end of your final session as nominated in your IETC form, you will be qualified from this course and the status of this course will show as passed. Once you have been qualified from your course, further amendment cannot be made to your study plan. Students will need to apply as new applicants to be admitted back into the Masters Program they were originally admitted into.

Why am I still admitted if I’ve submitted an IETC form?

If you do not meet the requirements for your course at the end of your nominated completion period, you will not be qualified, and your course status will remain as "admitted".

Below are some reasons why you may still have the status "admitted":

MISSING REQUIREMENTS

Students who are missing core requirements for their course, will not be qualified at the end of their studies. To confirm you meet all the requirements for your course, refer to Self Check in the Course Guidance form.

Missing credit points

Each course will have a minimum number of credit points you must complete in order to be eligible to qualify from your course.

Missing PACE requirements

All courses have a PACE requirement that needs to be met for course completion. Some courses have PACE embedded within them; however, a few courses still require the student to select a PACE unit within their course structure to meet this course requirement.

To check and see if you meet the PACE requirements for your course, you will need to check the General Requirements listed on the first page of your personalised study plan. If a PACE unit requirement is listed, then you will need to ensure you have completed a PACE unit to meet your overall course requirements.

Failed units

If you fail units in your final session of study, you may then be missing core requirements for your course and will need to re-enrol in these units to qualify for your degree.

INCOMPLETE GRADES

Students with Incomplete Grades at the time of completion will not be able to be qualified at results release. Once your incomplete grades have been finalised, we will assess you for qualification within 15 business days. If you have not received a Completion Letter within 15 business days and have completed all of the requirements of your course, please submit an AskMQ enquiry.
