Anushiya's inside story on the internship experience

17 March 2022

Hi, my name is Anushiya and I’m a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) student who has just finished an 8-week internship at Deloitte (and managed to score a return graduate job in 2023!).

With most major companies beginning the internship recruitment process in February-March, I thought I would share my thoughts on the benefits of internships with you.

Internships are first and foremost, a learning experience. Before you apply, think about all the experiences you have built over your time at uni, whether that be completing a favourite unit, joining a student society or developing new skills at a current or previous job. These experiences will shape your career interests and help you determine which internships will be most appropriate to you.

When I first began my law and psychology degrees back in 2018, I never once thought about starting a career in cyber risk consulting – let alone know that such a profession even exists! Yet looking back upon my experiences I’ve noticed that I’ve really enjoyed business consulting and learning about how the law interacts with emerging cyber issues and technologies. That's why I decided to apply for the Cyber Risk Advisory (Data and Privacy) Summer Vacationer program at Deloitte.

The great thing about internships is that they are short and sweet – you’ll be able to get a taste of what your future career may look like without committing to a full-year graduate program. If you ace your internship, you might even get a graduate offer at the organisation which means you have a massive weight lifted off your shoulder during your final year of uni – I’m fortunate to currently be in this position!

If you don’t enjoy it, no need to worry because having an internship and newly acquired transferable skills under your belt will already get you a step ahead of other students when you apply for graduate programs. As you can see, getting an internship is a win-win situation!
