With over 11 million members in Australia, LinkedIn is a wonderful platform to build your professional brand, expand your professional network, and keep up with what’s happening in your industry.

Whether you’re creating your profile for the very first time or looking to improve your profile, here are some handy tips to help you maximise your LinkedIn profile!

Choose a professional headshot

Choosing a friendly and professional headshot is key to making a great first impression.

Not sure what picture to use? Take a look around other student profiles or profiles of peers in your desired industry or company and match their dress code. A great headshot on LinkedIn conveys confidence and professionalism to potential employers.

Create a concise summary section

The summary section is the first thing visitors read when they visit your profile. It is a great way to highlight your achievements, skills, and qualifications. To ensure that your summary section is short and succinct, make sure that it is a maximum of one paragraph long.

Doing so will ensure that the most crucial information will be displayed before the viewer will have to click ‘see more’ to view the rest of your summary content. Your summary section should be concise, taking viewers through your qualifications, skills, and experience at a glance.

Share your achievements

Whether you’re polishing your profile or you've just started making one, it's a wonderful idea to share your achievements on LinkedIn! Sharing your achievements is an opportunity to showcase who you are and what you’re capable of.

Exhibiting your achievements on LinkedIn broadens your professional opportunities. As recruiters scroll through LinkedIn in search of high performers, they will be able to see your accomplishments and identify you as a high performer.

Follow companies and industries you’re interested in

What better way to keep up with the latest news in your industry than LinkedIn. Following firms, groups, and trendsetters on LinkedIn is a great way to keep up with what’s happening in your industry.

Since many companies have a presence on LinkedIn, following them will allow you to keep up to date with the latest company information, news, insights, job availabilities, and employee testimonials. Whether it be accepting a job or participating in the interview process, having a look through companies’ LinkedIn pages will help you get a better understanding of a company's culture and make sure it’s a fit for you!
