Founded in 1979, this private higher education institution is located in the municipality of Chia, 7km north of Bogota, Colombia. The campus in Chia is home to around 12,000 students, and the setting is a mixture of rural calm and charm, bordering on a green-belt around Bogotá, and semi-urban facilities. Bogota is the capital of Colombia and has a population of around 9 million and is the political, economic and cultural centre of Colombia, located in the Andes Mountain Range. It is a cosmopolitan and cultural city, offering students abundant possibilities. Chia has a unique charm and comfortable lifestyle – you can enjoy the best of the city and the country at the same time! As an exchange student you have a diverse choice in study, with courses available within the areas of business, communication, education and psychology. For students who wish to take their subjects in English, they can choose from subjects in the areas of economics, finance, marketing, engineering, political sciences, psychology and education

This four-week program offers students and young professionals the opportunity to have a cultural and academic experience in Colombia, one of Latin America's most diverse countries, while taking subjects on Latin American issues. For January 2019, the Program will offer two courses for you to choose from:

1. War and Peace in Colombia
The Peace Agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP guerrilla has ended the longest armed conflict in Latin America. This highly practical course will study the history of the armed conflict in Colombia, the basis of the transitional justice model that was implemented, the processes of peacebuilding and the current challenges.  As a participant, you will have the unique opportunity to explore the following topics:

  • A country that is trying to abandon the war.
  • 1960´s: the origins of the guerrillas.
  • A country that strives for making peace more than war.
  • Introduction to Peace Agreement.
  • Negotiation process in Havana, Cuba.
  • Transitional justice.
  • Peacebuilding strategies from the communities.
  • Current challenges of the post conflict and territorial peace (overview).
  • Murders of social leaders: the risks of citizen participation in Colombia.

2. Latin American Fashion: A Cultural Voyage
Over the past five years, Latin American fashion has been treading strong in international events and fashion runways. A new generation of designers - inspired by its origins and culture - has successfully begun conquering the world thanks to its unique talent, fresh ideas and raw materials. In this course, you will have the unique opportunity to learn about the outlook of Latin American fashion industry, its origin, inspiration, growth, evolution, characters and career opportunities. Each class is designed to create a different experience. Therefore, the course will include: field work, tailored lectures, at least one guest speaker, workshops, literature & video seminars and in depth projects of design, as well as presentations and cross critics. The Instructor – Camilla Villamil Navarro is a Colombian Social Communicator and Journalist from La Sabana who has more than 5 years of experience working in the fashion industry as a fashion consultant, content creator and social media strategist.

Thanks to her blog So Sophisticated, Camila has worked with many fashion and beauty brands and has been invited to the most important fashion weeks in Latin America and the United States including New York Fashion Week, Miami Fashion Week, Fashion Week Panama and Fashion Week Mexico City. Additionally, Camila has worked as a reporter for women's magazines such as Aló and Viva Lifestyle. Currently, Camila is a professor of Fashion Journalism and Fashion and Contemporary Image at La Sabana.

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following:

  • Macquarie Abroad General Eligibility Criteria
  • Nomination from Macquarie University
  • English language proficiency for non-native speakers
  • Review the course information and restricted courses to check it is suitable for your degree progression at Macquarie University

Important notes:

Application Fee and Payment Options: For all exchange programs (semester and short term), there is a compulsory application fee. For more information and payment options please refer to the Payment Website.

Insurance: It is a requirement of the exchange program that all students must purchase their own travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their entire journey overseas. More information will be given to students upon acceptance.

Program Costs: You will pay fees directly to the host university as this is a study-abroad program. You must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country.
