Now to Next: The Future of Reconciliation at MQ
This year’s NRW theme, “Bridging Now to Next”, invites us to draw on the lessons of the past while actively building a better future.
It’s a timely reminder that reconciliation is not a static goal but a continuous process — one that requires collective energy, intention and partnership.
As an Aboriginal man, this theme speaks deeply to me – it’s about honouring where we’ve come from, acknowledging the truth of our shared history, and taking deliberate steps toward a future shaped by respect, justice and equity.
At Macquarie University reconciliation is embedded in our values. From building cultural capability to fostering respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples, our work reflects a whole-of-university commitment to positive change. The theme aligns with our strategic direction and reinforces our shared responsibility to carry this work forward.
As a leader I acknowledge that the bridge to next is not going to be built overnight. It is shaped by the relationships we form, the difficult conversations we have and the commitments we make to genuine change. It’s about action not just symbolism. It means supporting Indigenous self-determination, protecting Country, embedding cultural knowledge into our practices and workplace and ensuring our voices are not just heard but centred.
As we reflect on Bridging Now to Next, we are reminded that reconciliation is not a destination, it’s a journey and one that must be walked together. As we look toward what is next it’s my hope we carry with us the wisdom of our ancestors, the responsibility to community, and the hope that future generations will walk across a stronger, more just bridge, one we have all helped build.
Get involved
We’re currently developing our new Indigenous Strategy for 2026–2030 — an innovative and forward-looking framework to guide our reconciliation and Indigenous engagement efforts over the next five years.
In the coming months you’ll be invited to provide input into the development of that strategy, to help us shape the future of Macquarie University. When the invitation to provide input comes to you, please engage and be part of this initiative with us.
