The University of California, San Diego is a public research university located in the La Jolla neighbourhood of San Diego, California, in the United States. The university occupies 2,141 acres near the coast of the Pacific Ocean with the main campus resting on approximately 1,152 acres. Established in 1960 near the pre-existing Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego is the seventh oldest of the 10 University of California campuses and offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, enrolling about 28,000 undergraduate and 8,000 graduate students.
Founded in 1963, the UC San Diego Linguistics Department conducts research and offers in-depth instruction in the main areas of linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics), contributing to both theoretical and empirical/experimental approaches to language, including computational linguistics, fieldwork, language acquisition, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and sign language.
The department is an active and integral part of the large language community at UC San Diego, together with colleagues in cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, anthropology, communication and philosophy.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:
- Student Mobility Team General Eligibility Criteria
- Sufficient proof of funding for US Visa (varies by university, approximately $8,000-10,000 USD)
- Nomination from Macquarie University
- English language proficiency for non-native speakers
- Review the course information and restricted courses to check it is suitable for your degree progression at Macquarie University

Applicants must complete an online application form. You'll need to include:
- your personal details
- three university preferences
- statement on how your preferences align with your degree at Macquarie University
Once you have conducted your research, it should take around 10 minutes to complete an application
Important notes:
Application Fee: $50 AUD, non-refundable
Insurance: All students are covered by Macquarie University AIG travel insurance and must purchase extra insurance to cover any travel taken before or after the official start and end dates for the semester abroad as well as any leisure activities outside of the scope of your program. Students in the USA may be required to purchase mandatory university health insurance plans and should expect this additional cost, while others may be able to waive this requirement dependent on the university chosen.
Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student, you pay no tuition fees to the host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, and incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country. For further information about your visa restrictions please contact the consulate or embassy of your host country.
