Supporting those with non-visible disabilities

Macquaire University is proud to have joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative.

What is the Sunflower Initiative?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a way to let others know you have a disability, condition or chronic illness that isn't immediately apparent. By wearing it, you can signal that you might need extra help, understanding, or patience when you're at university.

The Sunflower Initiative logo that has the image of a sunflower with the words 'Proud supporter of the sunflower' written in a circle around itThe Sunflower is a simple yet effective way to communicate your non-visible disability without explaining it whenever you need assistance.

What is a hidden disability?

Many people live with disabilities that are visible, but a significant number experience conditions that aren’t immediately noticeable to others. These non-visible disabilities can be short term, long term or permanent.

They may relate to neurological, cognitive or neurodevelopmental differences, as well as physical, visual or hearing-related conditions.

They can also include sensory or processing challenges and medical conditions such as respiratory illnesses, rare diseases or chronic health issues like asthma and diabetes.

Why Macquarie University is participating

At Macquarie University, creating safe, inclusive and supportive environments is essential to how our community operates. By supporting the Sunflower Initiative, we strengthen awareness and understanding of non‑visible disabilities across our campus.

For those with non-visible disabilities, the Sunflower lanyard enables them to navigate their environments confidently, choosing what they share or don't share about their non-visible disabilities.

How it works

Wearing the Sunflower lanyard is entirely optional, and there is no requirement to share or explain your condition. Choosing to wear it simply lets the Macquarie community know that you have a non-visible disability or that you wish to show your support for those who do.

For students

You can pick up your lanyard from the Thrive Hub, Monday to Friday, between 9am and 4pm.

For staff

If you are a Macquarie University staff member, you can participate in online training through Workday. Once you have completed your training and want to show your support, you can be recognised as a supporter by wearing the Sunflower lanyard. Staff can also learn more about inclusion initiatives at Macquarie University through our workshops and events on the intranet.
