Changing your course
If you want to change your course, apply for a course transfer.
A course transfer allows eligible students to change to a different course, add a second degree, move from a double degree to one of its single-degree components, or transfer to a different version of their current course where this option is available.
Note: If you want to add, remove, or change a major or minor, apply for a Change of Major, Minor or Specialisation.
Before applying, review the information below to understand the eligibility requirements, application dates and how a transfer may affect your studies.
Application dates and assessment timeframes
Course transfer applications can only be submitted during the published application period.
Study period | Applications open | Applications close |
|---|---|---|
Session 1 2027 | 23 November 2026 | 12 February 2027 |
Session 2 2027 | 17 May 2027 | 16 July 2027 |
Applications cannot be submitted after the relevant closing date.
Course transfer applications may take up to 20 business days to assess and process. Processing times may vary depending on the course and assessment requirements.
Some applications may require results from your current session before an assessment can be completed. Where this applies, your application will be placed on hold until your results are available. This may delay the outcome of your application.
You will be notified once a decision has been made or if further information is required.
Things to know before applying
Consider how a course transfer may affect your course structure, credit, study progression, WAM, academic standing and fees.
For most course transfers
If your application is approved:
- You may be placed into the current version of the course published in the Course Handbook for the year in which your transfer takes effect.
- Your completed units will be assessed to determine which units can be credited towards your new course.
- You will receive a new WAM calculated only from the units applied to your new course.
- Your academic standing from your previous course will be applied to your new course.
- The transfer may affect your remaining course duration, study plan and fees.
Not all units completed in your current course will necessarily count towards your new course. Seek course guidance before applying if you are unsure how your completed units may apply.
Moving from a double degree to one of its single-degree components
If you transfer from a double degree to one of its constituent single degrees:
- You will generally remain in the curriculum associated with your original admission year, unless the University determines otherwise. This does not apply to international student visa holders.
- Your WAM will remain unchanged.
- Your academic standing will remain unchanged.
- Eligible completed units will continue to count towards the remaining single degree, subject to course requirements.
Transferring to a double degree
The proposed double-degree combination must be available in the current Course Handbook.
You must meet the transfer requirements for each component of the double degree that is not already part of your current course. For example, if one component is already part of your current course, you only need to meet the transfer requirements for the new component.
Check your eligibility and course requirements
To be considered for a course transfer, you must:
- be currently admitted to an eligible Macquarie University course, including students on an approved leave of absence where applicable;
- have an active enrolment or course status that allows a course transfer application; meaning at least one unit with a Passed, Failed, or Withdrawn grade in your current course
- not have Academic Standing of Academic Pause or Exclusion; and
- meet the course-specific entry requirements for your preferred course.
Additional criteria or restrictions may apply depending on your current course, preferred course, study level or residency status.
Meeting the minimum requirements means that your application can be considered. It does not guarantee that your transfer will be approved.
Check the Course Transfer Requirements Table
Before applying, review the 2027 Course Transfer Requirements Table, which includes both undergraduate and postgraduate course transfer criteria.
- whether your preferred course is available for transfer;
- the minimum credit-point and academic requirements;
- any required units or grades; and
- any additional conditions or restrictions.
Meeting the eligibility and course-specific requirements does not guarantee approval. Some courses have limited places, additional assessments or competitive selection requirements.

Availability of each single degree does not necessarily mean that every double-degree combination is offered. Check the Course Handbook to confirm that your proposed double degree is available before applying.
