Review sessions, refresher courses and bridging courses.

Are you ready for your university courses? Are you worried about your maths skills or feel like you may need a refresher?

Numeracy Centre courses

We run a variety of courses at the beginning of each semester to help students prepare for their studies. Cost varies depending on the length of each course.

Bridging course text

The books used for our bridging courses, the MUMS modules, are available to download for free and are provided to students who attend the Preparatory Course in Mathematics.

You may also buy the books if preferred. Find out more information on the Bridging Course Texts page.

Enrolling in a course

Our Bridging Course Registration page lists the dates and times of all of our preparatory courses for the coming semester. You can enrol in a course online.

Some frequently asked questions and answers can be found at FAQ.

For further information, contact Carolyn Kennett by email at fse.numeracy@mq.edu.au.

Review sessions

Our review sessions and refresher courses are short courses run at the start of each semester to refresh and revise material and prepare students for their upcoming courses. Some may not be offered every semester, so check the Numeracy centre website to see the current offer.

Review Session in Basic Maths

This 3-hour session is designed to review basic mathematical concepts. Topics covered will include fractions, decimals, percentages, plotting, basic algebra and problem-solving. You can view the material covered in this course on the Course Notes page.

Recommended for students who are intending to enrol in first-year statistics and are feeling hesitant about their mathematical ability. This course is free and course is offered in March and August. Enrol now.

Refresher in Statistics

This is a six-hour course run across two days and reviews material covered in STAT1170. It is designed to brush up a student’s knowledge of introductory statistics before they commence second-year courses such as PSYU2248, BIOL2610 and STAT2170.

Concepts covered include hypothesis testing, statistical tests from the mean and regression. It is offered at the beginning of Session 1 and Session 2 and costs $75. Enrol into refresher in Statistics.

Bridging Courses

Preparatory Course in Mathematics

This is an intensive course for students from various mathematical backgrounds who need to enrol in first-year mathematics courses or need a solid review of introductory mathematical concepts. There are a number of different streams available.

  • Foundation Stream: for students who need an introduction to or review of algebra and function concepts. Recommended for students who have done HSC Standard (or General) Mathematics or no mathematics and are intending to include mathematics units such as MATH1000 or economics units at 1000 level in their programs of study. It also covers mathematical concepts that would be useful as preparation for statistics, chemistry and biology units.

This course is designed so that students intending to study mathematics units do the full 10-day course, while students studying statistics and some science units attend the first 5 days. The text used in this course consists primarily of MUMS Modules 1, 2 and 3 which can be viewed on the Text for Bridging Courses page.

  • Maths Bridging for PHYS1210: a bespoke version of the foundation course designed for BClinSci, BChiroSci and BMedSci students who intend to enrol in PHYS1210. It covers mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills that are useful in preparation for PHYS1210. This course can be used as a pre-requisite for PHYS1210 by students who do not have the required high school mathematics and attendance is compulsory for these students.

This course is a 1 week (30 hours) course. The text used in this course consists of parts of MUMS Modules 1, 2 and 3 which can be viewed on the Text for Bridging Courses page. Additional material will be supplied during the class.

  • Maths Refresher for Clinical Audiology: The Numeracy Centre offers a number of Bridging Courses and Preparatory Courses in order to help students prepare for their university studies. These intensive courses give you a solid foundation for your studies. All our courses are designed to support and build your confidence in mathematics. The Maths Refresher for Clinical Audiology is an intensive course for students from various mathematical backgrounds who need a solid review of introductory mathematical concepts. It is a bespoke version of the foundation bridging course offered by the Numeracy Centre and is designed for Clinical Audiology students. It covers mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills that are useful in preparation for units such as CAUD8003. In consultation with the academic staff in Clinical Audiology we have put together a short diagnostic test that will allow you to self-assess your mathematical readiness for some of the units in your masters degree. You can this to decide whether you think enrolling in the bridging course would be helpful.
  • The first part of the test, tests fundamental mathematical skill which will be useful in your studies, the second part is more difficult and tests some concepts that will be used in CAUD8003.

  • Extension Stream: The Extension Stream is for students who have not studied Mathematics for some time and need to refresh their skills before commencing MATH1010. It is also recommended as a bridge to HSC Mathematics Extension 1 for students who are using their HSC Mathematics results for entry into MATH1010.   To enrol in this course students must have completed HSC Advanced Mathematics or an equivalent course. Please note that this course cannot be used as a pre-requsite for MATH1010, PHYS1010 or PHYS1510.The text used in this course consists primarily of MUMS Modules 3 and 4 which can be viewed on the Text for Bridging Courses page.
  • The Preparatory Course in Mathematics is held in February and also in July each year. The Bridging Course Brochure above lists the specific dates and times that this course is run. To enrol you will need to go to the Bridging Course Registration page. For further information and enrolment enquiries, please contact Carolyn Kennett on fse.numeracy@mq.edu.au. If you are unsure which course to undertake the "Are you Ready?" link above may help you with that decision.
