How can individual counselling help?

Individual counselling can help if you experience:

  • Mental health concerns like low mood or anxiety
  • Relationship concerns including family issues, personal relationships, domestic violence and sexual assault. We may need to refer you to external specialist services for assistance with some relationship concerns
  • Career concerns if you are unsure about your career choice or struggling academically
  • Or if you want to change your behaviours like improved communication skills and improved time management

If you are concerned about something not listed above, please get in contact to discuss how we can assist.

How do I contact Student Wellbeing for individual counselling?

Submit a CARE report.

When you submit a CARE report, please let us know a good time to contact you.

Student Wellbeing staff will phone or email you, to ask about your concerns and situation, and plan the next steps with you.

What can I expect from individual counselling?

You can expect:

  • Access to individual counselling without needing a GP referral.  You may also receive a mental health assessment which will help identify your support needs and referral sources if you are not eligible for counselling.
  • Highly skilled and professionally accredited staff.
  • Please note, at peak times there may be a wait list for counselling.
Is it confidential?

We cannot disclose your information unless you give us permission. This means that we cannot disclose information to your family, other University staff, anyone who deals with your Visa or future employers.

If you want to work in certain occupations, like NSW Police, you may be asked to provide details about your mental health history. If you are concerned about confidentiality, please tell our staff.

When might we share information about you?

We can only share information about you if we believe that you could be at risk of significant harm, or other people could be at significant risk of harm. We may also be required to share information about you due to a court order or a Police search warrant.

How will I meet with the psychologist for individual sessions?

Counselling sessions can be delivered in person or using telehealth (zoom or phone).

Cancellation

Please let us know if you cannot attend a session the day before, so that we can offer the time to another student. If you cancel at short notice, or do not attend without notifying us, this may reduce the sessions available to you.
