Assessing your academic progress
Your academic standing indicates your current progress towards completing your degree.
Find out more about how your academic standing level is determined and where you can seek support below.
Determining academic standing
Your Academic Standing is based on the proportion of credit points that you passed in the current study period, together with the Academic Standing at the end of the previous study period.
Academic Standing is generally finalised:
- no later than at the Census Date of Session 2, when Session 1 is under consideration
- no later than at the Census Date of Session 1, when Session 2 is under consideration
Checking your academic standing
You can view your Academic Standing on your internal transcript as well as your Results Notification. You can retrieve your internal transcript through the 'My Results' tab in eStudent.
If you have difficulty viewing your results or Academic Standing, it may be due to outstanding debt on your student account, including tuition fees or library fines. You can check if you have any outstanding debts in the 'My Finances' tab in eStudent.
Your Academic Standing will not be displayed on your official transcript, AHEGS documents or status letter.
Academic standing levels

Satisfactory
You are progressing satisfactorily.
Academic caution
You should adjust your study routines before more serious intervention by the University is required. You also need to avoid moving to Conditional Enrolment at the end of the next study period.
To avoid moving to Conditional Enrolment at the end of the next study period, we recommend you seek support from your faculty academic advisers.
You should also perform the following actions:
- Engage with Macquarie University’s study support for student success. Access a range of support tools and services that have been designed to keep you on track for success, including study skills support, library services and wellbeing tools.
- Read through the information provided on the Academic Progression website.
- Contact Student Wellbeing to receive further assistance.
Conditional enrolment
You will be prevented from enrolling or changing your enrolment until you contact your faculty academic advisers to seek support to continue with your enrolment.
An academic advisor can:
- guide you on the appropriate units to enrol in
- help you decide on the number of units you enrol in the next study period. Reducing your study load may assist with your academic performance. If you are an international student you need to submit a Reduce Study Load application as early as possible.
- discuss whether your current course is still suitable, alternate courses you could consider, how to change your course, and any implications on changing courses.
You should also engage with Macquarie University’s study support for student success, where you can access a range of support tools and services that have been designed to keep you on track for success, including study skills support, library services and wellbeing tools.
Further unsatisfactory progress next session will result in your Academic Standing moving to Suspension.
Macquarie has a range of resources to help you whenever you are facing academic difficulties so you can get back on track.

Suspension
You will not be permitted to undertake any load at Macquarie University typically for two consecutive study periods. One of these study periods can be Session 3.
During the period that you are suspended you will not be required to submit a Leave of Absence, and the two consecutive study periods will not count towards your overall leave duration.
Any unit(s) that you are enrolled in will be withdrawn once your Academic Standing changes to 'Suspension'.
You will not incur fees for the withdrawn unit(s) and they will be reversed (including if you defer your fees through HELP).
If you have already paid your fees upfront, they will be re-credited against your account.
Following the period of Suspension, you have an automatic right of return to the current version of your course (subject to availability).
You must seek academic advice prior to re-enrolment.
When you can return to study depends on when you were suspended - see the table below.
Returning to study after Suspension
Suspension due | You are | Earliest date to enrol or apply for a new course | Status you will |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session 1 | Session 2 and Session 3 | Day after census for Session 3 | Probation |
| Session 2 | Session 3 and Session 1 | Day after census for Session 1 | Probation |
For information regarding when enrolment will open for the session you will return to, see Enrolment Dates.
Contact Student Wellbeing or your Faculty Student Centre for support prior to returning to your studies.
Probation
You will be unable to enrol until you contact your faculty academic advisers to seek support in order to continue your enrolment upon returning from Suspension. Your Academic Standing will be Probation for typically one study period when you return to study after Suspension.
Exclusion
You have not passed 51 per cent or more of your attempted load whilst on probation and will be excluded from the University for two years. In order to return to study, you will be required to apply for re-admission.
Any unit(s) that you are enrolled in will be withdrawn once your Academic Standing changes to 'Exclusion'.
You will not incur fees for the withdrawn unit(s) and they will be reversed (including if you defer your fees through HELP).
If you have already paid your fees upfront, they will be re-credited against your account.
Following the period of Exclusion, you must apply to return to your studies through the prescribed method.
You may apply for the latest or comparable version of your previous course or a different course providing
- you meet the relevant entry requirements
- you haven’t been excluded from further enrolment in that course under the General Coursework Rules or Fitness to Practice Procedure.
For more information about returning to your studies following Exclusion, see the Stopping your studies page for more details.
Following the two-year period of exclusion, you will return to study on an Academic Standing of 'Satisfactory'.
Upon returning to study it is highly recommended that you seek support from your Faculty Student Centre.
You will be assisted to identify and form a plan to help you readjust to study and maintain satisfactory academic progress.
Student Wellbeing is also available to offer assistance.
Pending
Your Academic Standing cannot be calculated due to unresolved results or incomplete grades. Once your grade/s have been finalised, you will be notified if there has been a subsequent change in your Academic Standing. Seek assistance from your Faculty academic advisers for further information on your incomplete grade/s.
Appeals
Students have 20 working days from the date of initial notification to appeal their ‘Suspension’ or ‘Exclusion’.
Students who believe they have grounds to appeal their 'Suspension' or 'Exclusion' may do so as per the Appeals Policy.
To find out more about how to appeal, please see the Academic Appeals website.
