Assessing your academic progress

Your academic standing indicates your current progress towards completing your degree.

Find out more about how your academic standing level is determined and where you can seek support below.

Determining academic standing

Your Academic Standing is based on the proportion of credit points that you passed in the current study period, together with the Academic Standing at the end of the previous study period.

Academic Standing is generally finalised:

  • at the end of Session 1, and generally finalised by the start of Session 2; and
  • at the end of Session 2, and generally finalised by the start of Session 1 in the next calendar year.

Checking your academic standing

You can view your Academic Standing on your internal transcript as well as your Results Notification. You can retrieve your internal transcript in eStudent. To retrieve your transcript navigate to 'My Study' then 'Manage My Course' and request an Academic Transcript from the 'Self Service Reports' option on the side menu.

If you have difficulty viewing your results or Academic Standing, it may be due to outstanding debt or missing information on your student account, including tuition fees or library fines, updating your Unique Student Identifier (USI), and other requirements. You can check if you have any outstanding debts and sanctions on your account in the 'My Finances' tile in eStudent.

Your Academic Standing will not be displayed on your official transcript, AHEGS documents or status letter.

Academic standing levels

You are progressing satisfactorily.

You should adjust your study routines before more serious intervention by the University is required. If your results do not improve, you will be at risk of moving to Monitored Enrolment at the end of the next study period.

To avoid moving to Monitored Enrolment, we recommend you:

  • Engage with Macquarie University’s study support for student success. Access a range of support tools and services that have been designed to keep you on track for success, including study skills support, library services and wellbeing tools.
  • Read through the information provided on the Academic Progression web pages.
  • Use the Academic Progression Self Guidance Tool to reflect on your study habits and personal situation, and make use of some of the many services and resources available to help you with your studies.

Macquarie has a range of resources to help you whenever you are facing academic difficulties so you can get back on track.

You will be prevented from enrolling or changing your enrolment until you have completed the Self Guidance tool. When completed, a code will be generated and this code needs to be entered into the Academic section of the Course Guidance form for your enrolment to be enabled.

You need to consider:

  • what will happen if you have not passed more than 50% of your attempted units in the next study period. Further unsatisfactory progress next session will result in your Academic Standing moving to Academic Pause.
  • the number of units you enrol in the next study period. Reducing your study load may assist with your academic performance. If you are an international student, you need to submit a Reduce Study Load application as early as possible.
  • any academic issues or personal difficulties that may have impacted your performance. You should engage with Macquarie University’s study support for student success, where you can access a range of support tools and services that have been designed to keep you on track for success, including study skills support, library services and wellbeing tools.
  • whether your current course is still suitable, or whether you should consider alternate courses.

You will not be permitted to undertake any load at Macquarie University for a period of 12 months.

During the period that you are on Academic Pause, you will not be required to submit a Leave of Absence, and the 12 months will not count towards your overall leave duration.

Any unit(s) that you are enrolled in will be withdrawn once your Academic Standing changes to 'Academic Pause'.

You will not incur fees for the withdrawn unit(s) and they will be reversed (including if you defer your fees through HELP).

If you have already paid your fees upfront, they will be re-credited against your account.

Following the period of Academic Pause, you have an automatic right of return to the current version of your course (subject to availability).

When you can return to study depends on when you were suspended.

Any unit(s) that you are enrolled in will be withdrawn once your Academic Standing changes to 'Exclusion'.

You will not incur fees for the withdrawn unit(s) and they will be reversed (including if you defer your fees through HELP).

Following the period of Exclusion, you must apply to return to your studies through the prescribed method.

You may apply for the latest or comparable version of your previous course or a different course providing:

For more information about returning to your studies following Exclusion, see the Stopping your studies page for more details.

Following the two-year period of exclusion, you will return to study on an Academic Standing of 'Satisfactory'.

Upon returning to study, it is highly recommended you chat to Service Connect about your return after an exclusion.

You will be assisted to identify and form a plan to help you readjust to study and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Your Academic Standing cannot be calculated due to unresolved results or incomplete grades. Once your grade/s have been finalised, you will be notified if there has been a subsequent change in your Academic Standing. If your grade is still pending 2 weeks after your final assessment, chat to Service Connect about the status of your incomplete grade.
