Executive Group, Council and Academic Senate
Macquarie endeavours to ensure that all strategic initiatives have governance oversight to promote openness and transparency, whilst keeping students at the forefront of the University.
Macquarie University Executive Group
The Executive Group is the principal decision-making body for all significant matters of University, including:
- strategy
- management
- administration
- related policy
The Executive Group are bound by the Executive Group Charter. Individual Executive Group members are responsible for specific portfolios, as described in the Macquarie University organisation chart.

Macquarie University Council
The University Council is the governing body of the University. It takes primary responsibility for the control and management of the affairs of the University to promote its objects and interests. It is also empowered to make by-laws and rules relating to how the University is managed
The University Council comprises of 15 members who contribute a blend of commercial, governance, legal, academic, administrative and public sector expertise to the business and operation of the Council.
Academic Senate
As defined by the Academic Senate Rules, the Academic Senate is the principal academic body in the University and has certain powers delegated to it by Macquarie University Council.
Academic Senate has established a number of committees to assist it in fulfilling its responsibilities and obligations. These committees, consisting of members of the academic and professional staff as well as student representatives, are entrusted with considering the detailed academic business of Academic Senate and bringing forward recommendations.
