Creating a safe and inclusive environment

The Ally Network aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community and foster an inclusive environment, free from harassment or discrimination, where everyone can work and study safely.

Ally network

The Ally Network is a visible group of Macquarie staff dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Through professional development, they champion the university's commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

What do Allies do?

  • Safe space: Allies provide a confidential and supportive space for anyone with questions or concerns about sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Visible support: They wear rainbow lanyards to show their public support for LGBTQIA+ staff and students.
  • Positive role models: Allies set an example by using inclusive language and challenging discrimination.
  • Advocates for change: They actively work to combat homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, and heterosexism on campus.
  • Information and guidance: Allies can offer resources and support to those who need it.

Important Note: Allies are not LGBTQIA+ experts or counsellors. They are dedicated staff members who want to make Macquarie a more inclusive place for everyone.

Student Allies

Students can complete LGBTQ+ Awareness training which covers Allyship. The course also explores why LGBTQ+ awareness and Allies are important for the workplace. Completing this course will give you an extracurricular achievement and skills to navigate inclusion and belonging on campus.

Pride@MQ

Pride@MQ is a professional/social group who gather over coffee and events. Primarily established for Macquarie’s LGBTQIA+ identifying employees, Pride@MQ welcomes LGBTQIA+ identifying Macquarie students and Macquarie Park Innovation District employees, and MQ Allies.

Joining Pride@MQ is easy. Send an email to Ally Network Steering committee allynetwork.sc@mq.edu.au requesting to be added to the Pride@MQ Teams channel, then watch out for posts on networking opportunities. Our Teams channel is monitored by MQ staff.
