In 2011, PACE Alumnus, Ryan Zahrai completed a PACE International activity with PACOS Trust in Sabah, Malaysia. He produced educational videos for indigenous communities regarding their land rights to protect them against land-grab disputes by commercial palm-oil interests.

“PACE empowered us to think creatively about legal education and local-community empowerment, and to devise a creative output that would outlive the duration of our stay.”

With PACOS Trust, Ryan produced educational video content for indigenous Arang Asli communities regarding their native title and land rights to protect them against land-grab disputes by commercial palm-oil interests.

Ryan’s PACE experience taught him to think beyond the short-term impact of studying and to consider the long-term significance of their creative, meaningful, and tangible contributions to both local and global communities.

Since PACE, Ryan has followed a career in law. In addition to his work with PACOS Trust, he has gained legal experience in Samoa and Israel before broadening his skills in business to become a well-rounded business, commercial and creative lawyer.

As Ryan expressed, “Your experience will be as transformative as you let it. Really think about how your skills, efforts and contributions can be best utilised by your partner organisation... It could well be the highlight of your university experience.”
