“My PACE experience gave me the confidence to continue in the field I am passionate about and provided me with a better understanding of the 'reality' of archaeology fieldwork.”

Ewan immersed himself in the field of Archaeology for his PACE unit and completed an excavation dig in Croatia at the archaeological site of Bribir.

Alongside Macquarie University’s Department of Ancient History, Ewan worked with international professionals and volunteers and gained invaluable practical experience in the field of archaeology (even getting the experience to excavate a medieval skeleton!).

Emerging from the dig with lifelong skills, professional and academic connections, and an energised desire to pursue ancient history and archaeology, Ewan’s experience provided him with an understanding of the ‘reality’ of fieldwork and bolstered his confidence to continue down the path of ancient history and archaeology.

He is currently completing a Master of Research in Ancient History and Archaeology at Macquarie University, with the aspiration of working in academic, heritage or industry capacities.

When asked for what advice he would provide to a future student, Ewan said, “Take any opportunity that presents itself to you during your PACE internship. You never know what new and valuable skill, friendship, or industry knowledge you will gain as a result.”
