The following types of sessions are available:
- Macquarie Kickstart sessions: help you find your feet and give you an idea of the culture at Macquarie
- Faculty sessions: provide an understanding of your course and study expectations
Macquarie Kickstart sessions
9.30am – 10am : Smoking Ceremony
A smoking ceremony will be held in the central courtyard, led by Uncle Chris Tobin, as a warm and meaningful welcome to new and returning students. This traditional Aboriginal ceremony will offer an opportunity for reflection, connection to culture, and a respectful start to the university experience.
11am – 3pm: Mentors Activities
Join us for a day of Mentor Tours and Events running from 10 AM to 3 PM, where you’ll have the chance to explore campus with the guidance of our knowledgeable student mentors! Throughout the day, mentors will lead tours, showing you the key spots on campus, from study areas to social spaces. In addition, there will be fun activities and events to help you connect with other students and get involved in university life. Whether you’re new to Macquarie or just looking to learn more about what’s available, these tours and events offer the perfect opportunity to ask questions, make new friends, and feel more at home on campus.
10am – 11am: MAC101: Tips to navigating your first session and year
Welcome to Macquarie University! As you embark on your first year, it’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed, but don’t worry – we’ve got your back! Join us at MAC101, where you can bring your devices along and our activator and peer mentors will guide you through the process of connecting to the Macquarie University network. This isn’t just about getting online; it’s your chance to gain a full picture of both the social and academic dynamics at MQ. Hear from current students who will share their tips, tricks, and lessons learned from their time here. Whether you're looking to connect your devices, meet new people, join student societies, or access support services, we’ll help you get set up for success.
10:30am – 11am : Manawari Training
Manawari Training is a First Nations cultural competency program designed specifically for students at Macquarie University. This essential training provides an opportunity to learn about the rich cultural heritage and history of Australia’s First Nations peoples, with a focus on understanding the significance of the Dharug land on which Macquarie University is located. Through this program, students will develop a deeper appreciation of Indigenous perspectives, protocols, and values, enhancing their cultural awareness and fostering a more inclusive campus community. By participating in Manawari Training, you’ll gain valuable insights and skills to support reconciliation and contribute positively to Macquarie’s diverse student body.
10am – 11am: Recognising sexual harassment and assault
The Recognising Sexual Harassment and Assault training session aims to provide young people with the knowledge and skills to understand the difference between sexual harassment and sexual assault. Participants will explore how they can effectively call out sexual harassment, contribute to societal change, and develop the confidence to recognize when such incidents occur. The session also covers how young people can take on the role of an active bystander, offering guidance on how to safely intervene and support others in preventing or addressing these harmful behaviours.
11am – 12pm: Responding to disclosures of sexual harassment and assault
The Responding Sexual Harassment and Assault training session aims to provide young people with the knowledge and skills to understand the difference between sexual harassment and sexual assault. 1pm – 2pm: Public Speaking Workshop
Created by the Macquarie University Debating Society. Our confident student activation team will guide you through crafting and delivering a compelling speech. This Workshop is designed to help you overcome your fear and anxiety, improve your delivery style, and engage your audience. Plus, with the rise of AI, it's becoming increasingly important to deliver presentations in a compelling and memorable way. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from your peer experts and take your public speaking skills to the next level.
2pm – 3pm: Books & Beyond - Unlock Your Potential with Waranara Library
Starting uni? MQ Waranara Library is your gateway to academic success. It's not just about books – think must-read articles, curated collections, and expert guidance to tackle referencing like a pro! 4pm – 6pm: Macquarie Shopping Centre Tour with the Buddies

Building a safer Macquarie community
Safer Communities @ MQ is a mandatory online course for students at Macquarie. The course supports a safer environment by helping you understand consent, respectful relationships, looking out for your peers and how to intervene safely if you witness inappropriate behaviour. Safer Communities @ MQ also provides information about support and reporting services at Macquarie, as well as safe sex education and alcohol and drug safety.
