Engage with your life at Macquarie

Check out our on-campus and online activities happening during Macquarie Kickstart to help you launch your Macquarie experience and build a foundation to succeed in your studies.

Sessions will be held on campus unless specifically stated otherwise.

The following types of sessions are available:

  • Macquarie Kickstart sessions: help you find your feet and give you an idea of the culture at Macquarie
  • Faculty sessions: provide an understanding of your course and study expectations

Macquarie Kickstart sessions

9.30am – 10am  |  Smoking Ceremony

A smoking ceremony will be held in the central courtyard, led by Uncle Chris Tobin, as a warm and meaningful welcome to new and returning students. This traditional Aboriginal ceremony will offer an opportunity for reflection, connection to culture, and a respectful start to the university experience.

10am – 3pm  |  Student Welcome Bag pick up

10am – 11am  |  MAC101: Tips to navigating your first session and year

Welcome to Macquarie University! As you embark on your first year, it’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed, but don’t worry – we’ve got your back! Join us at MAC101, where you can bring your devices along and our activator and peer mentors will guide you through the process of connecting to the Macquarie University network. This isn’t just about getting online; it’s your chance to gain a full picture of both the social and academic dynamics at MQ. Hear from current students who will share their tips, tricks, and lessons learned from their time here. Whether you're looking to connect your devices, meet new people, join student societies, or access support services, we’ll help you get set up for success.

10am – 11am  |  Recognising sexual harassment and assault

The Recognising Sexual Harassment and Assault training session aims to provide young people with the knowledge and skills to understand the difference between sexual harassment and sexual assault. Participants will explore how they can effectively call out sexual harassment, contribute to societal change, and develop the confidence to recognize when such incidents occur. The session also covers how young people can take on the role of an active bystander, offering guidance on how to safely intervene and support others in preventing or addressing these harmful behaviours.

10:30am – 11.30am  |  Manawari Training

Manawari Training is a First Nations cultural competency program designed specifically for students at Macquarie University. This essential training provides an opportunity to learn about the rich cultural heritage and history of Australia’s First Nations peoples, with a focus on understanding the significance of the Dharug land on which Macquarie University is located. Through this program, students will develop a deeper appreciation of Indigenous perspectives, protocols, and values, enhancing their cultural awareness and fostering a more inclusive campus community. By participating in Manawari Training, you’ll gain valuable insights and skills to support reconciliation and contribute positively to Macquarie’s diverse student body.

11am – 3pm  |  Campus Tour with the Macquarie Mentors

Join the Macquarie Mentors for a fun and informative campus tour designed to help you find your way around and feel at home at uni. You’ll discover key buildings, student support services, study spaces, food outlets, and hidden gems on campus. It’s also a great opportunity to ask questions, meet fellow new students, and start building connections from day one. Tours leave on the hour, between 11 and 3pm.

11am – 12pm  |  Responding to disclosures of sexual harassment and assault

Join us for speed friendship during Kickstart! This fun, fast-paced event is the perfect way to meet new friends and expand your social circle. 1pm – 2pm  |  From Butterflies to Brilliance: Public Speaking Workshop

This workshop is designed to help you overcome your fear and anxiety, improve your delivery style, and engage your audience, learning how to make the most of public speaking for your classes and presentations. Learn tips and tricks from our Student Activators on how to deliver presentations in a compelling and memorable way. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from your peer experts and take your public speaking skills to the next level.

2pm – 3pm  |  Books & Beyond - Unlock Your Potential with Waranara Library

2:30 – 3:00pm  |  Meditation Session in the Museum Gallery

Reconnect and recharge with this guided meditation session in the Gale History Museum gallery. Join us in this tranquil space and ground yourself ready for the semester ahead. You don’t need any experience in meditation; our expert facilitator will create a welcoming and accessible atmosphere.

3pm – 4pm  |  Undergraduate Study Essentials

This session will guide you through key study tips, campus resources, and academic tools to help you succeed in your studies. You can connect with important contacts, including support staff and services, so you know exactly where to go for help throughout your university journey. Whether you’re just starting or looking to improve your study habits, this event will set you up for success!

3pm – 4pm  |  Peer Mentoring Kickoff

Come along to the Peer Mentoring Kick-Off Session to learn all about how the Peer Mentors Program can support you in your transition to university life. This is a great chance to meet your mentors—friendly and experienced current students—who are here to help you settle in, make connections, and answer any questions you might have. You’ll get to hear how the program works, how you can make the most of it, and enjoy some fun activities while getting to know other new students.

4pm – 6pm  |  Macquarie Shopping Centre Tour with the Buddies

Join our friendly student buddies for a guided tour of the Macquarie Centre – your go-to spot for shopping, groceries, dining, banking, and more! This relaxed tour will help you get familiar with essential stores, public transport access, and places to grab a meal or relax between classes. It’s a great chance to meet new friends and get comfortable with your new local area.

3pm – 4pm  |  Academic Skills for International Students in STEM

This workshop is designed to support international students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering with key academic skills for university success and to build confidence in a STEM learning environment.

Are you a young worker just starting out in employment?  Maybe you have already commenced work and would like to know about your rights and obligations? Young workers, including international students, have the same workplace rights and protections as all working Australians.

Get to know Sydney! The Macquarie Buddies will take you to iconic landmarks in the CBD, such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and Darling Harbour. This event is free to join but you'll need to pay for your food, drinks, and public transport.

Meet: 1 Central Courtyard

Bring: Opal card (or credit card) to pay for public transport ;  a drink bottle ;  lunch if you don't want to buy it
