Elevate your research through funding

Looking to unlock the full potential of your research? Scholarships and grants don’t just provide funding - they give you the opportunity to focus, explore and elevate your work.

External scholarships and grants can do more than fund your research - they give you the freedom to explore new ideas, broaden your experience and connect with global research communities. By seeking out and applying for funding, you can strengthen your skills, expand your networks, and unlock opportunities that propel your research and career forward.

In addition to external funding, you may also be eligible for University-managed funding designed to support your research and help you progress your candidature.

Accessing external scholarships and grants:

  1. Identify a suitable opportunity - Review current external scholarships, grants, travel awards, bursaries or fellowships.
  2. Discuss the opportunity with your Supervisor - Before proceeding, discuss the funding opportunity with your Principal Supervisor. This conversation should confirm the relevance of the opportunity to your research and its compatibility with your candidature.
  3. Check eligibility and funding conditions - Carefully read all documentation relating to eligibility, use of funds and reporting requirements.
  4. Determine how the funding will be administered
    • Funding administered by the University - If the external grant requires Macquarie University to administer project funds, the application must be created in Pure by your Supervisor at least four weeks before the external deadline.
    • Scholarships, stipends, top-ups or tuition fee support - If the opportunity includes a scholarship component to be administered by the University, contact the Graduate Research Academy (GRA) with:
      • Your MQ student ID
      • Application guidelines
      • Deadlines
      • Relevant documentation or a link to the funding webpage
    • Paid internships with external organisations - Refer to the Industry Engagement information provided by the GRA.
    • Funding not administered by the University - Notify successful awards to gr.funding@mq.edu.au

Regardless of the funding type, you should advise the GRA if your application is successful to ensure appropriate records and support are in place.
