Macquarie University students are invited to apply for the LEAP UP Mentoring (Refugee Mentoring) Program, an initiative that started in 2011 in partnership with the NSW Department of Education.

The program is looking for participants who are passionate about social justice and education and who want to work with young people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Your job as a mentor would be helping high school students from refugee backgrounds (mentees) to learn about and transition into university life in Australia.

The sessions are conducted at partner high schools for a period of eleven weeks. The program includes one on-campus session where the mentees are invited to our campus so they can get to know what uni life is all about.

Candidates interested in becoming mentors must:

  • be willing to learn about the refugee experience
  • be available for an interview
  • be available for 3 to 4 hours a week at a fixed time for mentoring sessions (this is inclusive of travel time to and from the school)
  • be available to complete online training modules
  • be available to attend one full day of face-to-face training
  • undertake a satisfactory Working with Children Check prior to commencement of the program

You can learn more about this program and how it can benefit you as a mentor by visiting the LEAP UP Mentoring Program page.

Applications for the program close on Friday 4 June.
