Since the current lockdown has forced all of us to engage in online learning for the first couple weeks of uni, I'm sharing some hacks to help you ace online learning.

Find an appropriate study space

Before you start studying online, make sure you have a comfortable and functional study space at home. This should include a table and a comfortable chair, natural lighting, good ventilation and strong internet connection. Don’t study on your bed or couch!

Identify key online resources

As a Macquarie student you have access to a range of online resources and support to help you ace your online studies. You can make the most out of eBooks, MultiSearch, library guides, Leganto readings, course-related software, and Zoom workshops.

Actively participate

Class participation is usually assessed in units at Macquarie. They are often the easiest marks to earn, so don’t throw these marks away! Ensure that you’re adequately prepared to respond to your tutor’s questions during Zoom tutorials and via iLearn discussion forums by engaging in your course readings and listening to your online lectures.

Eliminate distractions

Studying online means that Facebook, YouTube, and Netflix are just one click away – but it’s important to resist them if you need to get work done! You can deactivate your accounts temporarily, delete apps from your phone, or even download an anti-procrastination app which prevents you from accessing these platforms.

Use social media or your streaming service as an incentive for getting work done. For example, you may want to reward yourself with an episode of your favourite Netflix show once you finish listening to your weekly lectures or finish writing 300 words for an assessment.

Take a break

The key to acing online studies is taking care of your physical and mental health. Over studying can lead to burnout, stress and anxiety. Constant online study can also strain your eyes and be detrimental to your physical health. It is always important to take a break every once in a while, to stretch, take a walk around your home, or get some fresh air outside.
