How you can help
You can support Macquarie students or staff who have been affected by sexual assault or sexual harassment.
Here are some actions you can take.
Check they are safe
- Check if there is anyone with them and that they are safe.
- Contact emergency support for immediate help or medical assistance.
On campus: 9850 9999 (Campus Security)
Off campus: 000 (Ambulance/Police)
Listen and give support
- Tell them you can help.
- Listen without interrupting.
- Encourage them to seek specialist support.
- Reassure them that seeking support will not affect their visa or academic progress.
Tell them about specialist support
- Tell them they can ask for an urgent appointment at Student Wellbeing.
- If they agree, you can call Student Wellbeing and ask for an urgent appointment.
- Tell them they can go to a medical centre or hospital about pregnancy or sexual health.
- To request a forensic exam, call Royal North Shore Hospital on 9926 7111 and ask for the sexual assault counsellor on call.
- Support services listed here can also arrange for you to access a free interpreter.
Tell them about how to report
Report to the University
- They do not have to give their name if they make a report.
- Reporting helps people affected get support and helps the University to respond.
- You can report for them. You do not have to give their name in a report if they don’t want you to.
Report to the Police
- They can make a report at a Police station.
- They can also use the Sexual Assault Reporting Option to report. Search online for ‘NSW Police SARO form’.
Take care of yourself
- Get support if you need it – it can be tough supporting others.
- Contact Student Wellbeing (students) or the Employee Assistance Program (staff) for free and confidential support.
