| Australian Government STIs are preventable and treatable, but early detection and treatment is crucial to mitigate serious health impacts. Regular sexual health checks are important as many STIs are often asymptomatic. They are also the only way to know for sure if you have an STI. In most cases testing is done through a simple urine or blood test. Sometimes, you might need to provide a swab sample too, which you can often do yourself. Test results are confidential and are between you and your healthcare professional. STIs can affect anyone who is sexually active, no matter your age, gender, relationship status or sexual orientation. The Australian government wants young Australians to be aware of STI prevention strategies including regular testing and safe sex behaviours (such as using protection) so they can feel more confident in having conversations about safe sex with partners, friends and health care professionals. |  |
