Dean of Higher Degree Research: Professor Nick Mansfield

The Dean, Higher Degree Research is Professor Nick Mansfield.

After completing his PhD from the University of Sydney, Nick was a Harkness Fellow at Columbia University in New York, and subsequently at Yale University. After returning to Australia, he taught at Flinders University in Adelaide, and then at Macquarie, first in English and then in Critical and Cultural Studies.

His research covers a wide range of issues in Cultural Studies and Cultural Theory, and he has published widely on subjectivity, radical sexuality, aesthetics and more recently on global political issues such as war and sovereignty. Of particular interest is the work of Franco-Maghrebian philosopher Jacques Derrida. With Dr Nicole Anderson, Nick was one of the founding general editors of the journal Derrida Today, published by Edinburgh University Press.

Nick has supervised a large number of HDR projects on issues as varied as tattooing, cannibalism, the psychoanalytic literary theory of Jacques Lacan and Luce Irigaray, whiteness studies, the fiction of Jean Genet, knowledge-sharing in corporations, Catholic martyrdom, tourism, and narrative theory in Western and Chinese literature.

Dean of HDR Roles

The Dean Higher Degree Research, Professor Nick Mansfield, is the senior academic responsible for research training across all Faculties and departments, including the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy and Bachelor of Philosophy/Master of Research programs. The Dean’s role covers policy development, supervision quality, research scholarships, and the quality of examination outcomes.

The Dean's office is also the home of the HDR Support and Development Program, which covers the Supervision Enhancement Program, the HDR Learning Skills and Professional Skills Programs and the HDR Mentors. The Office has a strong commitment to provision of advice and pastoral care to research training candidates, and their supervisors. The Dean also represents the university on the Australian Council of Graduate Research.

The Dean Higher Degree Research chairs the Thesis Examination Sub-Committee of the Research and Research Training Committee, and reports to the Committee on matters relating to research candidature progression, completion and policy.
