Throughout your candidature, you will need to make progress reports to the University. Aside from the Confirmation of Candidature, all HDR students are required to complete an Annual Progress Report. Your faculty or department may have additional reporting requirements.
These reports are not to be confused with the Confirmation of Candidature and related reports.
Annual Progress Report
The Annual Progress Report (APR) allows the University to monitor and evaluate your progress, to ensure a quality and timely completion of the research program. It allows yourself and your supervisor(s) to reflect on your progress and plan for the year ahead. You should use the Annual Progress Report to highlight any difficulties you have experienced which has or may impact your research, indicate if you need an extension of scholarship, and request any training programs you may require.
If your Faculty indicates your progress as satisfactory, your candidature and scholarships will continue. The progress report is also reviewed during consideration of a candidate's request for Postgraduate Research Funding (PGRF) support.
Who needs to complete the Annual Progress Report?
If you are currently enrolled in the research component of your degree and have been for any length during the year, you must complete the APR. This includes students who have been asked to 'revise and resubmit' their thesis (major/minor changes are excluded).
You do not need to complete the Annual Progress Report if any of the following, apply (2017 dates to be confirmed):
- You enrolled after 31 July 2016
- You have been on a continuous Leave of Absence since 1 January 2016
- You submitted your thesis to HDRO on or before 4 October 2016
- You notified the University of your complete withdrawal from your degree on or before 4 October 2016.
Failure to complete the APR will result in a show cause determination, including the suspension of scholarship. If you are unable to submit by the due date or are unable to submit online, you must contact your Faculty HDR Manager and HDRO immediately.

2017 dates for the APR are not yet available. Keep in mind there may be missing numbers in your form - this is because not all questions will apply to all candidates.
In some instances, you may be experiencing issues that you do not wish to include in your APR, or discuss with either your supervisor(s) or Faculty Associate Dean (HDR). If this is the case, you can request a confidential appointment with the Dean (HDR), Professor Nick Mansfield.
Faculty of Science and Engineering
The Faculty of Science and Engineering requires additional progress reviews every six months. Contact your Departmental Director, HDR for information on departmental requirements and deadlines.
