Individualised HDR support

Macquarie University offers a range of one-on-one consultation services for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, including data and statistical advice, and peer writing assistance.

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) and Master of Research (MRes) candidates can book a one-on-one appointment with their HDR Learning Advisor to discuss:

  • thesis writing
  • conference preparation
  • grant application
  • publishing
  • other learning skills issues

These consultations can take place in person on campus or over Skype/Zoom.

To book an appointment, email your HDR Learning Advisor, or email and your Learning Advisor will get back to you. Please include your name, your department, and what you'd like to discuss.

Statistical advice should be sought early in your candidature. Advice on data analysis and interpretation is available from Macquarie's Department of Statistics. This Higher Degree by Research Statistical Consulting Service is available usually on Mondays from 10am to 1pm.

The Department of Computing has introduced a Machine Learning Consulting Service, inspired by the Statistical Consulting Service from the Department of Maths and Statistics.

Associate Professor Mark Dras from Macquarie’s Department of Computing is happy to answer questions from Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students and academic staff about their research and how machine learning might be applied to it.

The Machine Learning Consulting Service is available on Thursdays from 10am to 12pm in Room 208, 4 Research Park Drive (at the end of Wally’s Walk, near the hospital).

Email Associate Professor Mark Dras at to make a booking.

The Peer Writing Assistance Program is designed to support Master of Research (MRes) and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates in managing thesis writing and research-related concerns. All peer writing assistants have undergone training for their role and are current PhD candidates at Macquarie.

Peer Writing Assistants function as a ‘fresh pair of eyes’ to help you gain a new perspective on your writing or research ideas. They facilitate 30-minute one-on-one consultations and can assist with the following:

  • brainstorm research ideas
  • work on an existing outline or chapter draft
  • develop effective academic/research skills
  • help you refine and strengthen written expression and communication of ideas
  • explore strategies around study-related issues such as time/project management and writer's block.

These one-on-one consultations are collaborative and involve your active participation. Peer Writing Assistants are not your tutors and will not be able to proofread or edit your work, but they can assist you in developing these skills yourself.

To book an appointment visit the Peer Writing Assistance Program page and register your interest.

The Macquarie University Library offers a wealth of research support to help you keep up to date in your field, manage your references, and to track the impact of your research.

For additional research support, book a consultation with your faculty research librarian.

The editing process for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates is governed by the ‘Guidelines for Editing Research Theses’ as set out by the Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd). You can search for an editor who offers the services you need and has expertise in the subject you are writing about at 'Find an editor'.

You must consult your supervisor before engaging an editor.

We also provide additional information relating to thesis preparation, submission, and examination.
