In addition to Higher Degree by Research (HDR) workshops, consultations and online resources, Macquarie University provides HDR candidates with a range of other research skills support.

Most faculties or departments run courses in research design and methods. Some of these are Masters units, which you may be permitted to audit. To find out more, contact the relevant unit convenor or your Faculty HDR team.

Statistical advice should be sought early in your candidature to minimise the occurrence of later problems. Advice on data analysis and interpretation is available from Macquarie's Department of Statistics.

This Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Statistical Consulting Service is available usually on Mondays from 10am to 1pm.

Check out the myRDC website for short courses on the use of popular research software, such as NVivo, SPSS, EndNote and Mendeley.

Many Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates are asked to teach (lecture or tutor) during the course of their studies. The Learning and Teaching Faculty team offers a range of on-campus and online workshops for those new to teaching and those seeking to improve the way they teach. You are able to contact your relevant Faculty Learning and Teaching Team member for further information.

There are also workshops for setting up and managing online units using iLearn, Macquarie University's learning management system.

The editing process for Higher Degree by Research (HDR ) candidates is governed by the ‘Guidelines for Editing Research Theses’ as set out by the Institute of Professional Editors Limited (IPEd). You can search for an editor who offers the services you need and has expertise in the subject you are writing about at 'Find an editor'.

You must consult your supervisor before engaging an editor.

Mindful Researcher

The Mindful Researcher is a unique four-part workshop series that focuses on the role that awareness and our states of mind (both positive and negative) play in the experience of being a researcher.

Workshops offer practical strategies on how to:

  • train your attention
  • develop good working habits
  • find balance in a competitive, high-pressure working environment.

These workshops are open to any Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students - Master of Research(MRes) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - and staff interested in building a more balanced and sustainable research practice and improving the quality of their experience at work.

Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation is the practice of focusing the mind on our present moment experience. It seeks to cultivate awareness, concentration and gentle self-discipline, whilst improving emotional regulation. These free sessions are for anyone interested in learning to meditate or practicing regularly with a group.

We offer two types of practice:

  • insight meditation (sitting, walking and body scanning practices)
  • mantra meditation (practicing with sound)
