Compulsory programs for HDR candidates

New candidates in research degrees must complete two commencement programs in their first year of study.

  • a University-wide introduction called the “Central Commencement Program” (CCP), and
  • a Faculty-specific “Faculty Commencement Program” (FCP).

MRes students have a separate CCP.

Central Commencement Program (CCP)

This is a compulsory program run for all HDR candidates and is completed online. Ensure you enrol and complete the relevant CCP.

We invite new HDR candidates to attend the Pro-Vice Chancellor's HDR Welcome, held early in each semester.

Faculty Commencement Program

Faculty programs run separately from the CCP and vary by faculty, involving a face-to-face or online program. Most are run twice a year.

PhD/MPhil

The Faculty of Arts Faculty Commencement Program (FCP) for new PhD and MPhil candidates is conducted online and can be accessed by enrolled candidates via the Arts HDR iLearn site. This program is designed to orient new PhD/MPhil candidates within the Faculty of Arts and to provide them with information crucial to conducting research within the Faculty.

It is compulsory for all candidates to complete the FCP within the first six months of their candidature, and all candidates are encouraged to review the FCP materials on a six-monthly basis, to keep abreast of updates and changes.

Each session, the Faculty of Arts also offers on-campus and online welcome sessions for new candidates, to give them the opportunity to meet the AD/HDR, Arts HDR Staff, and to ask any questions arising out of the FCP materials. Details of these sessions are communicated directly to candidates.

BPhil/MRes

At the beginning of each year, the Faculty of Arts offers a number of welcome/intro sessions for incoming student/candidates, with recorded/remote options available for candidates located offsite, and/or for MRes Y2 candidates who are starting mid-year. Details are communicated directly to students.

For details, please contact fmhs.hdr@mq.edu.au.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering’s Commencement Program is a half-day event that introduces candidates to all faculty-specific info and resources, including OH&S requirements and how to obtain ethics clearance for your research. If you are unable to attend, contact sci.hdradm@mq.edu.au.

Each department has its own induction program to help introduce you to your research colleagues, key staff and resources. Contact your department directly to arrange your induction.

Commencement Day is a series of workshops and training sessions to give you and your supervisors important skills and information. It is also an opportunity to meet students and staff in a friendly environment. All new candidates must attend, while current HDR candidates and supervisors are encouraged to come along. We will notify MRes students by email as to the workshops they must attend.
