Research

The Department of Cognitive Science is a research department which carries out research and PhD supervision across a wide range of domains of cognitive science. We host seven research groups, including:

  • Belief formation
  • Collective cognition
  • Hearing, audition and cognition
  • Language
  • Language acquisition
  • Perception in action
  • Reading

The department also hosts the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders (CCD), a world-leading centre in the cognitive and brain sciences. The CCD brings together researchers from several departments at Macquarie University and thirteen other national and international institutions to focus on five main areas of research: belief formation, language, memory, person perception, and reading.

In addition to its vibrant community of researchers, the department also houses state-of-the-art purpose-built laboratories and training facilities including:

  • non-invasive brain stimulation facility
  • event-related potential facility
  • KIT-MQ MEG facility
  • portable imaging facility
  • eye-tracking facility
  • Cognition in Action facility
  • language acquisition facility, and
  • behavioural cognition facility.

The department also hosts the Macquarie University Cognition Clinic for Reading, which provides research-based assessments and intervention for children with reading and spelling difficulties, and professional development for teachers and clinicians supporting children with poor reading and spelling.

The department, its facilities, and the Clinic are all located in the Australian Hearing Hub.
