Award of LLB with Honours

The following provides information on the award of honours in law at Macquarie Law School. Students meeting the criteria for honours will be awarded honours automatically: they do not need to individually apply for honours.

Calculation of CWA

Eligibility for honours in the LLB is based in part on a student's CWA (Course Weighted Average). A student's CWA is calculated as follows:

  1. Multiply the unit mark for each graded LAW/LAWS/LAWZ unit completed by the student by the value of that unit in terms of credit points;
  2. Sum the resulting values (weighted marks);
  3. Divide the sum of the weighted marks by the total number of credit points attained by the student in LAW/LAWS/LAWZ units.

Students will not be eligible for honours in law unless they have completed LAW555 or LAWS555 (depending on whether they have completed LAW550: see below for details). Students who complete LAWS355 will not be allowed to graduate with honours in law.

Award of second class honours

Students who have completed all of the requirements of their non-honours degree will be eligible for second class honours if they have:

  1. attained a CWA of 71 or above, and
  2. met the additional criteria specified below.

The additional criteria depend on whether the student has completed LAW550 or has completed LAWS398 and LAWS399.

Students who have completed LAW550

In addition to attaining a CWA of 71 or above, these students must have completed either LAW555 or LAWS555.

Students who have completed LAWS398 and LAWS399

In addition to attaining a CWA of 71 or above, these students must have completed either:

  • LAW555, or
  • LAWS555 plus an additional 21 credit points in LAWS or LAWZ units at 500 level.
Award of first class honours

Students who have completed all of the requirements of their non-honours degree will be eligible for first class honours if they have:

  1. attained a CWA of 76 or above, and
  2. met the additional criteria specified below.

The additional criteria depend on whether the student has completed LAW550 or has completed LAWS398 and LAWS399.

Students who have completed LAW550

In addition to attaining a CWA of 76 or above, these students must have:

  1. completed either LAW555 or LAWS555, and
  2. attained a credit or above in one of the following units: LAW561 or LAWS561 or LAW564 or LAWS564.
Students who have completed LAWS398 and LAWS399

In addition to attaining a CWA of 76 or above, these students must have:

  1. attained a credit or above in one of the following units: LAW561 or LAWS561 or LAW564 or LAWS564, and
  2. met one of the following two requirements:
  • they must have completed LAW555, or
  • they must have completed LAWS555 and attained 24 credit points in LAWS or LAWZ units at 500 level.

NB: For the purposes of calculating the 24 credit points, credit points attained as a result of completing LAWS555 may be included, as may credit points attained as a result of completing LAWS561 or LAWS564 (but not LAW561 or LAW564).
