Application process

Applications must be submitted before the census date of the intended study period.

Before applying

Check you meet the eligibility criteria before submitting a Leave of Absence application via eStudent.

International students

International students on a student visa must apply for the Suspension of Study (SoS) if you wish to temporarily suspend your studies under compelling or compassionate circumstances.

How to apply

Domestic students
  1. Submit your Leave of Absence request before the census date of the study period you are taking a break from via eStudent.
    • Go to 'Forms' tile on the eStudent homepage
    • Search 'Leave of Absence' in the search bar, and click 'Fill out' button
  2. Select your course(s).
  3. Select the start and returning study period.
    • If you have taken a Leave of Absence previously, that leave duration will be taken into account when processing your new request. The maximum leave entitlement for most courses is 12 months. See Leave of Absence for details.
    • Note: Session 3, Winter Vacation, Full-year study periods do not require an application to take leave from study.
  4. Select the reason for the leave request.
  5. Allow up to 5 business days for the process to be finalised. You should receive an email once your request has been processed.
    • If you want to return from your Leave of Absence early, please submit an enquiry via AskMQ outlining your desired changes.

To check if your Leave of Absence request has been approved:

  1. Go to the 'My Overview' tile on eStudent
  2. Click 'Coursework Summary' on the left-hand side of the page
  3. If your Leave of Absence application has been processed, it should appear here.
