STEP 1: Before you apply

Apply to Macquarie Abroad

Submit an application for Semester Exchange or Short Term programs

Macquarie Abroad will commence assessing the applications for these programs on a rolling basis, you should allow one month to receive an offer from Macquarie Abroad

STEP 3: Acceptance

After you receive your offer, then:

  • you will need to complete and sign the Acceptance of Offer and relevant program documents within one week
  • a welcome session for the program will be held in Week 4 of the semester after you applied, this session will overview the entire process of going abroad for you, please monitor the iLearn page for more information on this session
  • if the university you applied for requires an application form, you will need to complete the application form and send it to your host university
  • submit the host university application form along with any necessary documentation (i.e. passport photos, accommodation application, proof of funds, etc.)
  • begin obtaining subject approvals and creating a study plan (NOTE: this is not required for Short Term Programs, as our team pre-approves these courses. Please refer to the relevant Short Term Program page to see what credit has been approved)
  • log into ilearn and read the details in the community unit section for the student exchange and short term program

STEP 4: Preparing to travel

Once you have received your letter of acceptance from the host university:

  • apply for your visa
  • purchase your flight
  • purchase travel insurance to cover you for the duration of your time outside Australia
  • register with Smartraveller and International SOS
  • submit your travel grant and insurance details form to Macquarie Abroad
  • attend the compulsory pre-departure session
  • your travel grant will be paid after all details have been received, please allow 6-8 weeks for payment
  • depart for your host university

STEP 5: While you're away

  • meet your host university international office staff
  • enrol in subjects overseas
  • send your Macquarie Exchange advisor your enrolment form so that you can be enrolled at Macquarie
  • update your Instagram or Twitter accounts during your travels and include #MyMQ in your post
  • complete your approved subjects at your host university
  • ask the host university to send mi.exchange@mq.edu.au your transcript

STEP 6: Upon your return

  • ensure Macquarie Abroad has all the information to convert your grades
  • join Macquarie Exchange Students Society (MACex)
  • attend the Scholars Connect event to share your experiences
  • help out at Macquarie Abroad stall during O Week and Open Days

Information sessions

Information sessions about student exchange programs are run throughout semesters. At these sessions you'll find out more about eligibility criteria, academic matters, regional information, costs and funding, unit approvals and grade transfers, as well as what to expect once you are in the program, and the application process and requirements. You can attend any session.

Venue

Student exchange info sessions are held in Building E3A, Room 244. Enter E3A through the Globe Cafe, head up the stairs and you'll find the room at the end of the walkway to your left as you walk up the stairs.

Book an appointment with one of our Coordinators

If you cannot attend an Information Session,or your query cannot be answered via email, you are able to book an appointment to meet with one of our Coordinators. Macquarie Abroad Coordinators are available for appointments from 12 - 2, Tuesday - Thursday. Please make an appointment by visiting the E3A Reception Level 1. Appointments are made on a first-come-first-served basis, and are 15 minutes long.
