Profile

Dr Rahat Munir is a Professor, Head of Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance.

He has been an academic in accounting, finance and banking disciplines for over 25 years. His teaching is across undergraduate and postgraduate subjects in management accounting. He also supervises Master of Research and PhD students. Over the last two decades he has worked on various large scale projects, including projects micro credit, debtors’ recovery and change management. With extensive experience in all forms of academic endeavours  in tertiary and executive education and banking sectors, Professor Munir offer an unbeatable track-record of excellence in curriculum development, research leadership, change management, building teams, effective human resource and financial management, and a long and consistent track record of leading and building very efficient functional departments.

His research interests include management accounting systems, performance measurement systems, CSR, corporate governance, management control systems, banking systems in emerging markets and SMEs. He has published in leading international journals including Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, International Journal of Production and Operations Management, Journal of Environmental Management, Journal of Business Ethics as well as presented at international conferences and seminars in many parts of the world. He is affiliated with several professional bodies including Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, Professional Risk Managers International Association, USA, American Accounting Association and European Accounting Association.

Professor Munir has an excellent teaching profile.  His outstanding teaching has been recognised through several teaching awards, including the 2015 VC’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, 2013 VC’s Award for Programs that Enhance Learning and the 2012 Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award. At the national level his teaching excellence has been recognised by the 2015 Award for Excellence – Achievement in Academia by CPA Australia and 2014 Business/Higher Education Roundtable (B/HERT) Award for Excellence in Accounting Teaching Collaboration. Professor Munir's contribution has also been recognised at the international level through shortlisting of ACCG315 for the Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Award 2015 at the University of Pennsylvania in the Nurturing Employability Award category for the most innovative pedagogical approach to learning and teaching. Due to his expertise in learning and teaching, Professor Munir was appointed on the Judging Panel by the Reimagine Education Steering Committee (QS Stars -Wharton, University of Pennsylvania), for the global Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Awards Competition 2017 and on the Judging Panel by the Momentum Media for the Australian Accounting Awards. Professor Munir is one of four international finalists in the Decision Sciences Institute (Washington DC) “Best Teaching Case Studies Award” competition.

Professor Munir has developed a number of new programs and units, and has initiated a number of projects to position the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance, Macquarie University globally as a leader in innovative education, including undergraduate accounting curriculum renewal project, rationalisation of postgraduate programs, Master of Cybersecurity – Cyber Governance and Management, Grad Dip in Forensic Accounting and Accounting Co-op program and students at-risk program. He pioneered the first accounting PACE unit – ACCG315 (Accountants in the Profession) and capstone unit, FOBE800 (Contemporary Business Issues). In collaboration with CPA Australia, he initiated the career bootcamp program for accounting students, which is designed to not only highlight the importance of employability to accounting students, but to deliver sessions on strategic job search, mock interviews, social media micro-influencing, cover letter writing and dressing for success.

Besides serving on various boards and committees in the industry in the past, at present, he serves on various high level committees of the Macquarie University, Faculty and the Department. He works very closely with professional accounting bodies (CAANZ, CPA Australia, ACCA, IPA and CIMA), commercial businesses, consulting firms, public sector and NFP organisations through CFO Forums, Academic Seminar Series, Thought Leadership, Business Leaders Roundtables, conferences, and industry seminars. Professor Munir has also served as Deputy Head of Department, Undergraduate Program Director and Postgraduate Program Director. He has mapped a number of programs and units for articulation agreements. MoUs and pathways with national and international universities/institutions.
